Famous East End cinema’s original carpet cleaned and colour matched in major refurbishment...
Rodas Cleaning Services has recently completed a highly satisfying carpet cleaning and restoration project. The ground floor of the Troxy in Commercial Road, one of London’s most famous and original cinemas and, more recently, a Mecca bingo hall, has been refurbished to become a top venue, conference and banqueting suite.
The refurbishment has been the project of Troxy, a special division of Ashburn Estates set up to restore and manage the development. Troxy selected Rodas Cleaning Services to undertake the particularly challenging job of cleaning and restoring the building’s original carpet which richly matched the classical Troxy art deco surroundings. To replace the carpet would have cost £100,000.
Ray Power, proprietor of Rodas Cleaning Services, said:
"You can imagine what the carpet looked like when all the fixed seating was removed. The colour differences and tracks left by the old seating made for a really challenging job.
We used a variety of equipment and processes to get the colours to blend and the consistent overall texture to be restored. It was an intensive task but the results were truly worth it.
When the job was complete we got the thumb’s up from the caretaker who had been there for many years and said he couldn’t remember the carpet ever having even been cleaned!"
The Troxy, whose motto was ‘Where East is best’, opened in 1933 and seats over 3,500 people. The first film shown was King Kong and the last, in 1960, was The Siege of Sydney Street, based on true local events. It was also a live venue for top artists of its time like the Andrews Sisters, Gracie Fields, Petula Clark, and even Clark Gable. A young Vera Lynn, a local East End girl, made one of her first public appearances here.

Not only did Rodas Cleaning Services do a fantastic job but they did it very cost effectively, at a fraction of what it would have cost us to buy a new carpet.
The ground floor of the Troxy is now open to the public who are, once again, able to savour its original beauty and grandeur. We are currently embarking on the next stage of the project, the full refurbishment of the Troxy’s first floor."
